This is a personal, brutally honest, and exceedingly rich story of a person's (and a family's) early journey through the challenges and triumphs and (to quote the author) "heartbreak and joy" of having a special needs child. Very compelling, it is also a very important book. I would recommend that anyone with a family member with special needs read it. Perhaps more importantly, I would recommend it highly to professionals in the field; including therapists, OTs, speech professionals, educators and para-educators, principals, school district attorneys, and BCBAs. I gained much from this book and believe others would as well. The author bares her soul and invites you into her brain and heart. We therefore are exposed to an experience in all its truth, unrelenting rawness, and severity in a way that is highly edifying. At the same time we witness the author's humor, strength, and fortitude that can't help but inspire. Unless you missed picking up your heart in Oz you will be moved mightily by this book. And appropriately so.
